Posted By: Anna Garcia

The geranium is a very common plant in balconies and gardens, forming as a whole a range of colors that adorn terraces around the world. In addition, its continued flowering during the spring and summer months fill your home with life and color.

Did you know that there are more than 400 varieties of geraniums? Let's start with a little history ... geraniums come from South Africa, the first plants of this species arrived in England in the 17th century. Later, in 1786, Thomas Jefferson extended the plant to America. Today the geranium is one of the most popular flowers.

THE CARE OF GERANIUMS: LIGHT, TEMPERATURE AND SOIL REQUIREMENTS.

.

1. Light

Geranium is a plant that requires demanding amounts of light to flourish. They need a minimum of 6 hours of sun, even more if possible and the ideal temperature is between 18 - 20 ºC. If you have a balcony you will not have problems, but place it near a sunny window.

.

2. Irrigation

In summer the geranium asks you to water it two/three times a week, on the other hand, during the winter one watering is enough. Avoid overhead watering with a watering can! In this way you will prevent diseases or mold from appearing. Water at ground level, in addition, we advise you to put stones in a plate and add water to the tray to keep the humidity of the plant without flooding.

Make sure the soil is moist but not excessively watery. Many of you ask us the recommended amount of water. The measure would be around 200-250 ml of water each irrigation in summer or very hot areas and half in winter. Less than half a glass of water :-)

.

3. Substrate and compost

If you have a good substrate, your geranium will grow happily and without stopping! With a conventional compost it will work for you, but yes, enrich it with the plants ECO first aid kit :-)

Geranium is a bit demanding in terms of subscriber. The nitrogen deficiency is seen immediately since its leaves progressively take yellow tones and you will notice a general decay.

.

4. Pruning

Geranium is generally not pruned. Leaves that are drying or necrotizing should be removed, because it can be a source of disease. Remove the parts of the geranium that are drying out!

.

5. Multiplication of the geranium

If a plant is not enough for you, it is time for you to multiply it through cuttings. Select the sturdiest cuttings of the geranium (with 3 or 4 leaves) with a height of 10 cm or more. The cut should be made close to a knot, as it will stimulate root growth and the roots of the plant more easily.

When should I make cuttings? In summer and early autumn and from the beginning of February to mid-March.

.

6. Pests and diseases

Geraniums are hardy plants but they can be susceptible to pests and diseases, especially in very humid weather. The plants must be protected in a ventilated place but without a draft. Too little air can cause illness; On the other hand, if they receive too much air, it will break the stems of the plant and affect its growth. Very important: remove dead flowers so they do not consume energy.

In the care of geraniums we can find the following pests: Whitefly, borer, red spider etc. We recommend that you use our ECO plant kit!
