Upcycling in contract design: how we turn waste into spaces with soul

Every year, tons of low-value plastics end up in landfills, incinerators, or in nature. These are materials that are difficult to recycle and have no commercial value, such as agricultural plastics or multi-layer packaging. In response to this issue, HabitUp emerges — a collaborative project that champions the circular economy and proves that it’s possible to give new life to what was once considered waste.
.
Circular Economy from the Source
.
The process begins by recovering plastic waste traditionally discarded by the industry. These materials are carefully selected based on their physical, mechanical, and aesthetic properties.
Without adding virgin resins or compounds, they are pressed using thermo-compression techniques to create unique panels that are 100% recycled and recyclable.
This approach not only prevents the generation of new waste but also reduces dependence on fossil resources and minimizes environmental impact.

Sustainable Design for Contract Spaces
.
The recycled panels created by Habit Up are used in furniture specifically designed for contract spaces: hotels, offices, educational centers, or healthcare facilities. These are functional and aesthetic solutions such as benches, counters, or recycling containers, created by brands committed to sustainability, including CitySens, Planning Sisplamo, and Aleteo Insight.
These products not only make use of recycled materials but also promote design with purpose: durable, adaptable, beautiful, and environmentally respectful.
.
Closing the Loop
.
One of the project’s greatest strengths is its long-term vision: products made with these panels can be recycled again at the end of their life cycle, returning to the beginning of the cycle as raw material. Habit Up thus shows that circular design is possible, functional, and desirable.
This model proposes a new way of understanding design: not as an end, but as a process in constant motion, where each product is also the beginning of a new story.
